Best line from a movie review ever!

From Anthony Lane's review of Sex and the City, in The New Yorker, June 9 & 16, 2008:
"I walked into the theater hoping for a nice evening and came out a hard-line Marxist..."

Keeping us tried and true

Finn and Charlie is up

Joni Mitchell sang, "We don't need no piece of paper from the city hall / keeping us tried and true," and in a way, it's true for all gay and lesbian couples, like Finn and Charlie. The real marriage is in the relationship, and the acknowledgement of family and friends that you are indeed a committed couple. But at the same time, that piece of paper comes with numerous tangible benefits. To me though, it's not even about the benefits; it's about some kind of official recognition. I've gone a long time without it, and many others have gone even longer.

And now that you've read my spiel, please go and sign this petition at the HRC website. Thank you.

Won't You Please - 6/24/08 show, subbing for Ginny

Today I subbed for Ginny, in the slot right before Think Pink. I expected to be a little more relaxed, since it's late afternoon, but the traffic on the way delayed me to the point where I arrived almost exactly at 4, which left me a little out of sorts. Also, this week is BMI log week, in which we have to record the composers of each song we play; this made extra work over the course of the show.

On the other hand, I had a request for True Love Always, a band I'd never heard before, and I really liked it. It reminded me of The Aluminum Group — jazzy with nice vocal harmonies.

Other item of note: the opening track of Sigur Rós' new album is in fact called "Gobbledigook". Most of the rest of the songs have Icelandic titles. To me, this is funny.

Fight for your right to be boring!

I am scannerless at the moment, so the comic came out a little odd — I did my best with a digital camera. Next week I'll rescan and reload.

We are here at the end of the visit from Kevin. I didn't know exactly where this storyline would go when I started, and I'm not sure I was able to say what I wanted to — three panels a week only gets you so far. In any event, dear reader, if you think you may know who Kevin was based on (and perhaps you think it was you) let me assure you that Kevin comes almost entirely from my fertile mind.

Go read the comic.

It's kind of like Tetris, actually.

Finn and Charlie is up!

In spite of what this comic might imply, I'm really very free-to-be-you-and-me. Some people have open relationships and others do not, and I don't think one kind is inherently better than the other. It's up to the people in the relationship. I think honesty is more important than anything else.

I just fond a web tool for making virtual mix tapes, called MixWit. I made this one, which is most of today's show. Some songs are missing because they couldn't be found -- Ella Fitzgerald, for example, and (surprisingly) the new Elvis Costello. It did find Joe Clay, however, which I didn't expect. Also, some of the songs are apparently not full versions, just 20-second teasers. Whaddaya think?

He recovers quickly...

This week's Finn and Charlie is up.

It's kind of an off week for me. I couldn't get the drawings to look right, and it turned out I drew the frames in the wrong proportions. But hopefully you'll like it anyway, well enough.

I am officially no longer a DJ at WLUW. Long story.

However, the Chicago Independent Radio Project will have a webcast soon, and I'll be a part of that. And we can still talk about music... leave me a comment if there's something on your mind.
